TRACES OF JOAN OF ARC IN ORLEANS<\/h2>

When you think of Orleans<\/strong>, you probably think of Joan of Arc<\/strong>.<\/p>

After all, the history of the capital of the Loire region<\/strong> is inextricably entwined with the history of the young woman who turned the tide of the Hundred Years\u2019 War<\/strong>.<\/p>

After entering the city on 29 April 1429<\/strong>, Joan of Arc and the French troops forced the English to withdraw from the Siege of Orleans on 8 May 1429<\/strong>.<\/p>

Orleans has faithfully preserved the memory of this heroic figure, nicknamed the Maid of Orleans<\/strong>, ever since. Indeed, she\u2019s impossible to miss!<\/p>

H\u00f4tel Groslot<\/h3>

A statue of Joan of Arc<\/strong> stands in front of this city-centre mansion<\/a>. It still bears the scars of fragments of the bomb which struck the Cathedral in 1944. Inside, various decorative elements recall the Maid of Orleans<\/strong>.<\/p>

Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts<\/h3>

The collections<\/strong> housed at Orleans Fine Arts Museum include the proliferation of depictions of Joan of Arc <\/strong>beginning in the second half of the 19th century.<\/p>

Sainte-Croix Cathedral<\/h3>

Ten stained-glass windows<\/strong> in the Cathedral are devoted to Joan of Arc. One of the bells<\/strong> was named Joan of Arc in 1898. A chapel<\/strong> was dedicated to the national heroine in 1926. Notre-Dame-des-Miracles Chapel<\/h3>

St Paul\u2019s church<\/strong> stands south of the Joan of Arc Museum. It houses ceramics<\/strong> by Orleans artist Jeanne Champillou<\/strong> depicting Joan of Arc.<\/p>

15TH CENTURY CITY WALL<\/h3>

Segments of the city\u2019s Roman and Medieval ramparts<\/strong> remain standing today. In the east, the Tour Blanche<\/strong>, or \u2018white tower\u2019, stands alongside a portion of the Roman curtain wall<\/strong>. In the north, the wall can be seen in the courtyard of the former bishop\u2019s palace and near the Cathedral<\/strong>, while the foot bridge connected to Porte du Matroi<\/strong> is visible in the car park beneath the square.\u00a0 In the west, sections of the Medieval<\/strong> wall are still visible on Rue du Clo\u00eetre-Saint-Paul and Rue de la Ch\u00e8vre-qui-Danse<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Rue Jeanne d’Arc<\/h3>

One of the most iconic streets in Orleans<\/strong>, Rue Jeanne d\u2019Arc leads to Sainte-Croix Cathedral.<\/p>

Originally planned to be called Rue Bourbon<\/strong>, it was renamed<\/strong> after the city\u2019s legendary liberator<\/strong> shortly before completion.<\/p>

Maison de Jeanne d’Arc<\/h3>

The house of Joan of Arc<\/strong> is where the young woman stayed for a short time in April-May 1429<\/strong>. A multimedia room<\/strong> on the ground floor shows a film about the history of the national heroine<\/strong>. Upstairs is the research and archive room<\/strong> housing just under 37,000 documents all about Joan of Arc.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Place du Martroi<\/h3>

The equestrian statue of Joan of Arc<\/strong> is a bronze monument made by Denis Foyatier in 1855.<\/p>

The bas-relief sculptures on the pedestal depict various scenes from Joan of Arc\u2019s life, from the divine voices heard in Domremy to her burning at the stake in Rouen.<\/p>

The base was damaged during the Liberation fighting in 1944. The bas-relief sculptures, removed in 1987, were replaced by casts. The originals are now conserved in the city\u2019s Fine Arts Museum.<\/p>
